PostGis to ArcCatalog

Uwe Seher
Hello!
I am working on a PostGIS-Connector for ArcGIS 9.1 too. So i Think i'm in
the right place here.
In my case the PgOleDb-driver works fine. The only Problem is the
geometry-field. It cannot trasmitted in a binary Format, so I have to
convert it in PostGIS to a string and reconvert it in the client. So has
someone a clue how to tramsmit the geometry in binary format?

Re: PostGis to ArcCatalog

Paul Ramsey
Are you using postgis1.0? It should have a binary binding already in
place for geometry. If not add one using the AsBinary() function.

AW: PostGis to ArcCatalog

Uwe Seher
Hello!
Yes i am using PostGIS 1.0 with the last postgres on Win2000.
The asbinary()function delivers this error from PgOleDb-driver, also with no
conversion.

PgOleDb: Error: no binary output function available for type geometry

I mailed to Shachar Shemesh, an he send me here, because the error lies in
PostGIS.
Its a little bit confusing...

Postgis 0.x did no have a binary output function defined
for the geometry type, but the asbinary() function returned
a WKB type which had a binary output function (when compiled
against postgresql > 7.3).

AW: PostGis to ArcCatalog

Uwe Seher-2
To get a wkb-datatype and from this a binary? Or was this a
missunderstanding?
It was possible to create the wkb-field with asbinary(), but it also
couldn't tranfered to the client.
I try to install Postgis 1.0.1 later and try again.

The only way to get a real binary is using a binary cursor.
For all postgis versions an asbinary() invocation in a binary
cursor returns a WKB in real binary form.
